Gov't Mule High & Mighty
By R. A. Van Vleet
Warren Haynes is simply da shit!
People have realized that ever since he, and the now deceased Allen Woody, strayed from the Allman Brothers to form Gov’t Mule with drummer Matt Abts. That was 12 years ago (damn!). Within that time, the band has had three studio releases that continuously enforce how cool Haynes is. Now, he's high and mighty too, or at least that's what release number four calls itself.
For any fan of the band, just get this disc. It's all that you expect Gov’t Mule to be. Haynes consistently surprises us with his vocal ability and walks the line between country and metal, or did he create that line?
Guitar rages through every song. "Brand New Angel" is balls to wall guitar. "So Weak, So Strong" displays intricate guitar and cool mellow. "Child of the Earth" is the gem of the album. It has single potential; a strong vibe and slow hand guitar. Every track offers that something different and Abts is always right behind Haynes adding awesome percussion and his distinct drum style. Also appearing on High & Mighty is Danny Louis (keyboard) and Andy Hess (bass). They put the finishing touches on an album that's great for downing a sixer on a sweet summer day.
Praise to Gov’t Mule for carrying on bar room blues and bringing it to a new level!
