Modest Mouse
We Were Dead Before
The Ship Even Sank

By Jeremy Grand

For more than a decade, Modest Mouse has been gracing the college airwaves with their unmistakable screaming, clever and transcendental lyricism, and catchy toe-tapping good old rock and roll.

Up until the release of Good News for People Who Love Bad News, no one really knew who they even were, and then all of a sudden, "Float On" became an anthem for the year 2004. Now with the release of We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank, expectations are high, and those expectations will be easily met.

The unmistakable voice of Isaac Brock, the hard drum beats and deep base, the screaming, the subtleties, the clever lyrics, have not stepped a foot away from the band in the least bit. In fact, the refining is so on-key that this may be arguably the best Modest Mouse album to date.

In "We've Got Everything," they claim to have "got everything down to a science," and they definitely have.

The first single, "Dashboard," has all the same charm as Float On, making it a great one for the mainstream airwaves.

Every song is notable and unforgettable, from the creative and addicting beat driven "Steam Engenius," to the party starter "Fire It Up," to the signature cynical darkness of "Spitting Venom," and the slow buildup to the big finale in the song "Parting of the Sensory."

Over the course of the band's seven LPs, numerous EPs and extras, Modest Mouse has evolved and grown while always staying true to their original strengths and powers, never faltering, never succumbing to the pressures of pop.
