Madonna Hard Candy
By Damien Monaco
Madonna - a name that everyone knows. Her musical career has lasted more than 25 years. She has had an amazing ability to adapt and change her style to coincide with the current trends and never be forgotten. Some may see this as simply leeching off what is popular, but with Madonna, she has always come out on top, perfecting the current trends and astonishing people with her skills. However, with her latest album, this is simply not the case.
It's sad that it has come to this. Throughout the past few years, artists such as Timbaland and Missy Elliott have created a unique style that many try to replicate. Madonna, trying to cash in on this, attempted her version of Timbaland's unique style. She failed. What's worse, Timbaland contributed to this CD and it still turned out badly.
There is no point discussing individual songs, as they all sound the same and blend together. Certain songs do have one or two characteristics that make them stand out just a bit from the others, but overall, you will get to the end of the CD, unsure of which song was which.
The only specific songs worth mentioning are the songs that feature guest appearances. They are the main distinguishing factor of the music on this CD. Justin Timberlake and Timbaland appear on "4 Minutes" and Kanye West appears on "Beat Goes On." For some odd reason, Pharrell Williams does not get proper credit for appearing on "Incredible." With the other artists, their names appear big and bold along with the song title on the back cover, but Williams only gets mentioned in the illegible credits listed inside the booklet.
Don't get me wrong, this CD is OK. It's tolerable to have as background music while doing other activities. But if you are looking for good tunes to sit down and listen to, this is not it. You also have to consider the artist; if this was some random person, I would probably consider it to be better, but Madonna has already produced such magnificent music, and this CD was simply not up to par for who she is.
Another factor into this CD is price. Retail price of this CD is $18.98. Meanwhile, at the store I was at, all other CDs were retailing for around $14. I guess someone is a little full of herself to think she deserves that much more money. I personally don't even think this CD is worth the $9.99 sale price I paid.
