Chromeo Fancy Footwork
By Jeremy Grand
All of those little girls nowadays with the sideways ponytail and the plastic Madonna beads all have the right idea. The '80s have returned. On Chromeo's second album, Fancy Footwork, this New Wave style is absolutely evident. Maybe the '80s really aren't back, but to these guys it never really went anywhere to begin with.
Just watch the "Bonafide Lovin'" video, an homage to "Money For Nothing" by Dire Straits, a signature dish of '80s cuisine, cutting edge computer animation and all with a sound and language that all Gen X- and Y-ers can understand without an aural dictionary.
But anyone with a good appreciation for humor and dance hall hits can understand. A song about a "Momma's Boy" is funny, and so is calling your love their "Tenderoni," though don't confuse them for, or think you are getting a sort of Weird Al album - this is far from it. The humor is mostly subtle and weirdly deadpan. It's not egging us on for a laugh. Instead, what you get is three decades of the best and most likeable cheese rolled into one big cheddar log, synthesized, and neatly packaged.
These boys are totally rad, and their Fancy Footwork will never go out of style.
