Mermaid Parade 2008 at Coney Island

By Damien Monaco

The Mermaid Parade has been an annual tradition since 1983, when it was created to pay recognition to the Mardi Gras celebration that was held in Coney Island from 1903 to 1954. According to its Web site, the parade "celebrates the sand, the sea, the salt air and the beginning of summer, as well as the history and mythology of Coney Island, Coney Island pride and artistic self-expression."

This year, the parade, which was held on Saturday, June 21, featured a variety of sights, including people dressed up as mermaids, sea creatures and many random characters that have absolutely nothing to do with anything - which is where the artistic self-expression comes in - as well as antique cars and marching bands, among other things.

After the parade on Surf Avenue, everybody flocked to the boardwalk, where it became one big party. Spectators watched live music and burlesque shows, while others relaxed on the beach or got some food and beer at many of the establishments located on or near the boardwalk. Others chose to attend the Mermaid Parade Ball, which was held once again at Childs Restaurant Landmark.

It will be interesting to see if, or how, the Mermaid Parade will change in the years to come, as this is the last year Coney Island will be open with its current look. After this season, Coney Island will close for a bit while it receives a facelift. For more information on the Mermaid Parade, go to www.coneyisland.com/mermaid.shtml.
