Wii Fit

By Jeremy Grand

Summer is here, people, and all of you lazy Wii owners who think they're getting exercise by waving around and shaking your little remote, think again. It's time that all of you little Mii's get up off the couch and onto the Wii Fit balance board.

Wii Fit is, of course, the new biggest craze to hit the ever-popular console, creating a wave of wannabe exercise fanatics that can't really afford a gym membership. The software and balance board cost about $90, plus the additional, but mostly unnecessary, accessories, like the yoga mat and board cover. All of it's still cheaper (and smaller) than a Bowflex machine or treadmill.

Now, don't think that because this is basically a fitness "game" that you won't get a decent workout. The software has a great array of workouts that covers pretty much all the bases when it comes to body toning. There are yoga routines, strength training, aerobics and the difficult balance games. The yoga and strength categories are taught by your choice of a male or female trainer, while the others are played along with random Miis. You start with basic exercises, and the more that you do, the more routines are unlocked, making you want to work out more and more.

Wii Fit makes exercising fun for those who never really cared to work out in the first place. The aerobics section features a Hula-Hoop contest, step dancing, the often-amusing island jogging track and the pump-you-up rhythm boxing. The yoga is great for stretching your body and relaxation, but not great for people with low ceilings. The strength training will absolutely make you sweat and be sore for days, and the trainers are always giving tips and encouragement. The balance games are more difficult than you'd think, but with a little practice, you can see how good your balance could be. And like Brain Age for DS, the Wii Fit will tell you your Wii Fit age, which is even more encouragement for those who don't like to be insulted by a machine.

If you can get your hands on one of these highly sought after boards, buy it. It will get you off the couch and into that Speedo or bikini you always wanted to wear, but were too afraid to put down the remote and pint of Ben and Jerry's to even bother trying. Exercise can be fun, and Wii Fit proves it.
